Family/Maternity Session in the Rain, Colonial Heights, Virginia | RVA Photographer

I’m really interested in photographing people in a way that is nontraditional, fun, imperfect, even a little messy. I have taken the cookie-cutter poses over and over… and while it’s nice to have traditional photos of ourselves, it’s too rare to have photos that actually show our personality and ~feel~ like us. Taking pictures but also making a core memory through playing like a little kid & having cinematic photos to remember it by - that’s what lights me up. Less stress, more fun.

Shot on digital only. Photographer's cut for the blog.

When I shot Mackenzie & Isaac's wedding last year, I asked them what they were most excited for after their wedding. Mackenzie instantly said "having a baby." She texted me not too long after and booked a maternity session to celebrate the family welcoming in baby William Nash. We split up our sessions into two halves - a milk bath and family session. I really wanted to incorporate the whole family into Mackenzie's maternity session. I had a whole concept planned and then we got surprised with the most beautiful, moody, warm rainy day. We embraced it. I had so much fun dancing in the rain playing with the Mitchells. I think this session healed a part of my inner child. How often do you get to play in the rain and make sentimental art? I am so in love with these photos. I imagine how the kids will look back on these photos hopefully for the rest of their lives. Quality time is so special, that's really all a session with me is. Just be with your people, have fun, and boom ... magic. <3
